Thanks for the reply.

To me, the decision to quit seemed heroic, and powerful, the more so because taking responsibility for a mistake and actually being willing to pay a price for it went out of fashion in this country with flapper hats.

I don't have strong opinions about the tactics. Both Wagner and Trenberth et al stood up, spoke out, and while keeping an element of scientific cool, got mad at the liars and said who they were and how they lied. That's progress in my view, and I celebrate it.TheTrackerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10011829472333355911noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6718772691289114123.post-72474806451697738152011-09-06T03:36:58.886-07:002011-09-06T03:36:58.886-07:00I couldn't agree more with your statement: &q...I couldn't agree more with your statement: "Let's tell it like it is, and not be afraid raise our voices at the really outrageous parts. Let's let liars be called liars and stand before the public exposed. Let's show the table the card up the grifter's sleeve, and if we're hurting his wrist, too bad. Let's bury the Dukakis effect."

But you will have to explain to me how Wagner's resignation fits into that strategy. He has been referred to as honorable and respectable. Why should we be sure he will be replaced with someone that can be similarly described?

To paraphrase a passage above: Many observers feel that Wagner's resignation lacked a vigorous restatement of the honor and respectability of his reputation and belied his self-avowed passion for publication of sound science.

In the interest of burying the "Dukakis effect," he should have admitted no more than momentary inattention, defiantly stated he was remaining at his post, "called out" the schemes/schemers at his journal and pledged to take measures to insure that nothing of the sort ever happened again. THEN there would be reason to applaud his actions.

He is another unfortunate example of a principled person refusing to engage in the politics imposed by his adversaries. Sorry, scientists, it's ALL politics now. The more you back down the easier it is for your adversaries to crush you.

The denialist public harpies may be expressing outrage, but an observer would be terribly naive you think their monied backers are not preparing to refine and repeat this process of driving out integrity in the realm of scientific publication and filling the resultant void with their designees.

John PumaJohnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12479974040070719985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6718772691289114123.post-11291244266952176642011-09-05T21:26:01.534-07:002011-09-05T21:26:01.534-07:00You're totally right.
